Eye Movement Densensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a form of therapy wherein the patient recalls a traumatic event while simultaneously receiving stimulation on both sides of the body administered by the doctor. Such stimulation may involve moving the eyes from side to side, sounds delivered to each ear through headphones, or physical sensations to both sides of the body. The theory behind EMDR is that in patients with symptoms of trauma, the trauma has not been fully processed. EMDR provides a pathway to access and process the trauma in order for the trauma to be successfully resolved.EMDR is performed by mental health professionals who have received advanced training in this form of therapy.
