Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) is the adaptation of Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to the treatment of Bipolar Spectrum Disorders. Principles of IPT have been extended to incorporate specific psychoeducational modules about Bipolar Disorder, including causes, course of illness, medications, and related information. Additionally, many patients with Bipolar Disorder have dysregulated circadian rhythms (daily sleep/wake cycles). These patients are taught how to use social rhythm techniques in order to establish control over their circadian rhythms. It is thought that stability of circadian rhythms helps prevent future bipolar episodes.IPSRT is performed by mental health professionals who have received advanced training in this form of therapy.
