Group Therapy Services

  • Group Therapy

In Group Therapy patients meet with a therapist and other patients to discuss problems, learn about themselves, or have healing experiences.
  • Transition

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) provide day treatment group therapy services for patients who are transitioning to independent living.
  • Residences

Some patients may choose to live in Sober or Transitional Living Residences to provide additional structure and stability while undergoing treatment.

Q: What kinds of group therapy do you offer and can I attend as few or as many groups as I want to?

A: You can attend one single group if you want to, or you can pick and choose which groups you would like to attend. You can attend all the groups offered by registering for the Intensive Outpatient Program.

The Arroyos offers a wide range of specific group therapies. The first type of groups are interactive in nature such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Mindfulness and Process Group. The second type of groups are instructional in nature such as the Medication Management Group, the Psychiatric Relapse Prevention Group, and the Anger Management and Assertiveness Group. The third type of groups are experiential in nature and include Art Therapy and Music Therapy. The fourth type of groups and activities are body-focused in nature and involve therapeutic yoga and structured visits to an outside gym. The fifth type of groups are skills-based in nature and involve developing and improving planning, organizational, social, computer, sobriety, and daily living skills.

Q: What is the Intensive Outpatient Program and who should attend this Program?

A: The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays. Patients attend interactive, instructional, experiential, body-focused, and skills-based groups and activities.

Patients can attend the entire program, which includes a noon meal on weekdays, or they can select a more limited schedule such as attending mornings, afternoons or a single day of the week.

The IOP is appropriate for patients who are transitioning to independent living or who are wanting more structure in their daily lives. All patients in the IOP program have a psychiatric disorder and they may or may not have an additional chemical dependency disorder.

Q: What are the group leaders backgrounds and qualifications? Can I keep my own therapist or psychiatrist if I attend the Group Therapy Program?

A: The Arroyos has strict guidelines on group therapist qualifications. Almost all group therapists are doctors who are licensed clinical psychologists, which is an extremely high standard of care within the treatment community.

For specialized treatment groups such as Art Therapy and Music Therapy, we carefully select therapists who have extensive background and training and who are typically Board Certified in their respective fields.

In most cases you may keep your own therapist or psychiatrist while attending groups at The Arroyos. If you do not have a mental health professional, you may see a doctor through our Personal Therapy Services or we can make a referral for you through our network of preferred providers.
